Misfits & Majesty

Corey, age fifteen, sauntered into my office with an air of arrogance. His mom and dad followed, downtrodden and dejected. In our first session, it was clear that these parents did not have one positive thing to say about their son. They focused only on the negative: Drug abuser, habitual liar, failure in school, misfit in social situations.

Boys really want to share their hearts. Let me say that again. I am so tired of teenage boys being portrayed as one-dimensional, superficial, and non-relational. Teenage boys want more than to be a jock, hook up with a girl, or drive a fast car. They want to connect with another human being.

Just wanted to let you know that my brother tried taking his life today. Well, they took him to the ER. I just wish I had some sort of meaning to him that’s all.

He told me he thought he was addicted to acting out his anger. Brad said it best: “It is the only time I really feel alive.” It also relieved him of all those rolling emotions. Even though it left everyone else bloody and battered, Brad felt better.
There is magic and majesty in the midst of exhausting work
